My name is Nicole Duff, I am the gal behind MOOD Design Studio. Thanks for swinging over to check out my FIRST blog post! I’ve been in the process of revamping my website and now that it’s almost ready to go I thought it would be a great time to get my blog underway. Better late than never!
Me – Nicole Duff
It’s been a couple of years already since MOOD Design Studio’s inception so I’ll give you a bit of back story:
I began “MOOD” late in 2012 while home with my young children. Spending so much time in the house got me wanting to make it a more creative and personal space. I have always been a huge color lover and fan of bold geometric designs so I started on a search for fun and modern home decor that appealed to those tastes; unfortunately my search for textiles and decor in this niche kept coming up disappointingly lackluster.
So, what was a creative soul to do other than to being designing my own? I’m not one to back away from a challenge so I hopped onto You Tube and began learning basic upholstery. I revamped a few sad looking vintage chairs and to my surprise everyone loved them!
And while I loved getting all dirty with hammers and staple guns, it was a lot of hard work. I wondered what I could make next? Lamp shades seemed like a neat idea!
One thing you should know about me is that there is barely five seconds in the day when my brain is not trying to conjure something up. I swear I can barely sleep most nights because of all the ideas swirling around in my head. Really.
So lamp shades led to pendant lights and lamp bases and pillows, then eventually to the obvious – yet most difficult to master – textile design itself. I taught myself Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator and read a bazillion textile design blogs and books and eventually the practice became more comfortable. It’s a learning process and I love it – my husband may tell you I love it more than him 😉
Now about my style, or “design esthetic” as I sometimes like to refer to it: what is it about MOOD Design Studio that stands apart from the rest? Though I like to consider myself a “trend-setter” I do love to research color and pattern trends when I am designing new collections. My inspiration tends to come from a mix of mid-century architecture and what I see strutting down the high fashion runways; this high speed collision of mental stimulation is what has lead to my signature style; bold and colorful shapes and forms that have a distinctively “Retro Chic” quality.
My designs are not quiet – though neither am I; they are bold and colorful, like me. I like to think that they allow people to drop their guards just a little, to feel ok with their quirks and nuances, to say it like it is and just to be freely who they are. My designs say – “Come and play!”
Fast forward just over 2 years to today; it is humbling to see how MOOD Design Studio has taken off. My products are now in homes spanning the globe. From counties across Europe to Hong Kong and Australia, and of course the US and Canada (my home). I have had press from some of the top design magazines, blogs and TV shows and I’m feeling the love.
So there it is – MOOD Design Studio in a nutshell. I hope you’ll keep in touch by leaving comments on my posts and coming back to hear more!
Please tell me what YOU think about MOOD Design Studio! I’d love to hear your thoughts 🙂
